Autumn Leaves

by Donna L. Hamilton, MD, MS

I’m always on the lookout for good wellness tips.  Sometimes it isn’t just the tips that catches my attention but the way it’s presented. It’s how they’re presented.  A few years ago I received a mass e-mail with a long list of practical self-care tips.  I don’t know who originally created the e-mail but I see why it went viral.

The simplicity of the tips caught my attention. Most of the tips seemed like something your grandmother would say to  you.  As we all know, many times grandma does know best!  In the spirit of the K.I.S.S. principle (Keep It Simple Sweetie) here are the ten items on what I’m calling “Grandma’s Self-care and Stress Reduction tips.”

Enjoy.  Be well.

1)     Go to bed on time.

2)     Get up on time so you can start the day calmly and without rushing.

3)     Say no to projects that won’t fit into you time schedule or that will compromise your mental health.

4)     Delegate tasks to capable people.

5)     Simplify and unclutter your life.

6)     Less is more. Although one might not seem like enough two are often too many.

7)     Allow extra time to do things and to get to places.

8)     Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time. .Don’t lump all the hard things together.

9)     Take one day at a time.

10) Have backups (ex. an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the  garden, extra stamps, etc.)

Be well.
