With all of the news about diet and nutrition, much of it contradictory, it seems more difficult than ever to know what to eat that is good for us. We have endless choices of foods available now, from the fresh to the processed, much of it labeled “healthy” for being fat-free, low carb, low sodium, whole grain, and a variety of seemingly righteous appeals for our purchasing dollars. Trying to eat a wholesome diet that is suitable for our individual needs can be an exercise in frustration.

Often when one is diagnosed with a condition such as diabetes, the physician will bring in a registered dietician to help the patient alter his or her diet to help manage the disease. Registered dieticians are licensed health professionals with extensive education and clinical experience in nutrition principles to enable them to provide sound, evidence-based nutritional guidance. They consider all factors of a patient’s health status as well as lifestyle and preferences to design an appropriate, customized dietary plan that the patient can successfully maintain.

A disease state doesn’t have to be present for one to benefit from nutritional guidance from a registered dietician. Nutritional consulting can be beneficial to all who are interested improving their health by making better food choices. Perhaps you would like to lose weight safely or maintain a healthy weight and know that fad diets don’t work. Perhaps you are an athlete and want to maximize your strength and endurance, knowing that nutrition is a basic building block. A dietician can help you design a healthy eating plan that fits with the busiest lifestyle for whatever your specific dietary needs.
